Letter to the editor: Cathy Glasson ‘gets it’

Cathy Glasson is the woman to lead Iowa into the next decade. Her bold, unapologetic stances are, to put it frankly, necessary. We are far past the time of nuance when talking about health care, equal rights and strong laws for workers. It is far past time to adopt bold policies in these areas which have been under direct assault for a long time. The way we fight back is to present a clear bold choice to Iowans. Iowans have been taken advantage of for decades by the establishment. It is time to take our state back.

Letter to the editor: Johnson County needs Mike Carberry

I’ve known Mike Carberry for 15 years, since our days working together on the Howard Dean campaign, and now I’ve worked with him on the Board of Supervisors for a year and a half. I know him to be a passionate environmentalist, a studious worker and a caring person. Mike is a real fighter. He fights for social justice, for economic justice, for racial justice and for environmental justice.

Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls just knocked on my door

A very personable, articulate and intelligent young man just knocked on my door. Zach Wahls is closing in on his 2,000th door! The admirable man he has become was evident as an eighth grader in my English class. He impressed me tremendously even then. After researching the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman, he was incredulous that there was no monument to her in Washington. He said one day he would change that. I have no doubt he will.

Letter to the editor: An endorsement from Zach Wahls’ seventh-grade teacher

With Zach’s passionate interest in community affairs, his educational background and his ability to connect with all groups and listen to community concerns, I see Zach as the strongest candidate to represent us in the state legislature. I think its essential for us as a community to give all the supports we can for this young passionate voice that will be our senator in Des Moines.

Letter to the editor: Vote for Janice Weiner for Iowa Senate

In 1984, when Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro were running as the presidential and vice presidential Democratic candidates, the Iowa Democratic Party hired a young woman as their only Johnson County field organizer. Her job was to “get out the vote” for the Democrats. Her name was Janice Weiner, and she had just finished law school. I, too, worked on that effort.

Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls is an inspirational leader

The choice in the Democratic primary for Senate district 37 on June 5 is not an easy one. We have strong candidates, with numerous varied strengths. I am writing to express my support for Zach Wahls. Zach’s passion, intelligence and dedication to issues such as mental health, social justice and supporting children and families with disabilities are, frankly, inspiring. I hope, prior to deciding how to cast your vote, you take an opportunity to meet Zach and discuss issues important to you.

Letter to the editor: John Norris is the leader Iowa needs

Iowa is in trouble. Recent conservative control is threatening Iowa values through mismanagement of health care, declining support for public education, disregard for Iowa’s environmental heritage, an assault on public employees, more cuts to the University of Iowa and Iowa State, and the likely loss of “backfill funds” that will lead to increased property taxes and cuts in services at the local level.
