On April 7 at The Mill, the San Francisco indie group Deerhoof will take the stage alongside Love Songs for Lonely Monsters and Wet Hair. The group has released 11 self-produced albums since forming in 1994, garnering a reputation for their raucous, high-energy stage presence.

Music: King Pop – An Interview with Paul Collins
“One of the things I enjoy most about touring now is playing with up-and-coming bands.” This was one of the first things Paul Collins said to me when we recently chatted about his 2013 Midwest tour. It makes sense because thirty years ago, Paul Collins was in two up-and-coming power pop bands, The Nerves and […]
Prairie Pop: Jonathan Richman’s playground punk
Most proto-punk legends don’t write songs like “I’m a Little Dinosaur” or “Ice Cream Man,” but Jonathan Richman isn’t your typical rock ‘n’ roll dude. Since forming The Modern Lovers in 1970, he has made a career out of defying expectations.

Show Videos: The Mill’s Annual Christmas Party – 12/18/12
I have mixed feelings about the holidays. I get a little Grinchy this time of year even though there are many things around Christmastime that still make me happy. Like paper chains, twinkle lights and carols. Especially carols. As a result, the last few years I’ve been in happy attendance at the Mill’s Christmas Show. Up until […]
Show Photos: Good Habits Cassette Release Party – 12/14/12
Ugh! I am such a procrastinator and the week is already slipping away from me. Despite my faults, I didn’t want to pass up an opportunity to share some photos and details from Good Habits’ Cassette Release show last week. Yes, folks, bands still release albums on cassettes…really good albums, too. Last Friday at Gabe’s, […]

Music: Elite Eight Albums of the Year 2012
If nothing else, 2012 can be described as the Year of Easy Listening. A multitude of indie bands (Beach House, The Walkmen, Divine Fits), beat makers (Flying Lotus, Lindstrom, Crystal Castles) and hip-hop artists (Killer Mike, El-P, Big KRIT) put out strong, extremely listenable albums, which, in turn, made it difficult for anything to really […]
Audio: Happy Birthday, Harry Chapin
On Dec. 7, Harry Chapin would have been seventy years old. He died in 1981, so why remember him now? One could make the case that the early death of any artist is tragic. How much was left uncreated? In Harry’s case, how much left unsung? But that standard merely puts him in the category […]
