Titus Andronicus, Lost Boy and The Olympics stopped by Gabe’s last weekend for an intense night of punk rock and general rabble-rousing. Below you’ll find photos featuring Lost Boy and Titus Andronicus, specifically (a scheduling conflict led me to miss The Olympics’ set, unfortunately). Lost Boy offered up solid guitar-driven punk, while Titus Andronicus played […]
Gabe’s Iowa City
Titus Andronicus to perform at Gabe’s Saturday
This Saturday, indie punk rock veterans Titus Andronicus are set to return to Iowa City for a show at Gabe’s along with Lost Boy and The Olympics. Known for their stirring live shows including extended renditions of already lengthy rock ‘n roll songs, the show kicks off at 10 p.m. and promises to go well into the night.
Check out The Appleseed Cast this Tuesday at Gabe’s
Kansas-based band The Appleseed Cast are scheduled to play Gabe’s Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The band has gone through a number of lineup changes since forming in the late ‘90s, and as a result each of their albums has a markedly different feel. Early in their career, The Appleseed Cast was defined by critics as being an emo band. In a lot of ways, they were an emo band at the time, but recently it seems like they’ve outgrown that label and moved closer to something more quantifiable as post-rock.
Revisiting Nirvana at Gabe’s July 5, 1989
After filtering through the plastic, MTV-generated hype and the tabloid exposure of Courtney Love, you could tell from listening to Nirvana’s records and watching them onstage (although not all the time!) that something big and timeless was going on. Who can you say that about these days? It’s a phenomenon that gets rarer and rarer. […]

Live Music Preview: May 8-13
The month of May has come, and, while this means nothing for the various working stiffs in Iowa City, it does signal one of my favorite times of the year: the exodus of most of the undergrads and the summer slowdown. Everyone’s more relaxed, restaurants don’t have lines and I get free reign of Brothers […]
Acid Mothers Temple to play Gabe’s May 1
Acid Mothers Temple started in 1997. Founder and guitarist Kawabata Makoto organized some jams with local musicians that were interested in composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, progressive rock and krautrock (read: Can, Faust, Tangerine Dream). Liking what came out, they dubbed themselves Acid Mother’s Temple and released an album. By 1998, the apostrophe was dropped and the Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. came into existence.
