The Appleseed Cast
Gabe’s – August 20 at 8 p.m. ($12-14)
Kansas-based band The Appleseed Cast are scheduled to play Gabe’s Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The band has gone through a number of lineup changes since forming in the late ‘90s, and as a result each of their albums has a markedly different feel. Early in their career, The Appleseed Cast was defined by critics as being an emo band. In a lot of ways, they were an emo band at the time, but recently it seems like they’ve outgrown that label and moved closer to something more quantifiable as post-rock.
The Appleseed Cast’s most recent record, Illumination Ritual, has a very open-ended, multi-textural sound. Much of the album is characterized by tracks, including “Great Lake Derelict,” that open with clean guitar lines and tight percussion that builds toward some undefined, brighter space overlooking it all. There’s a certain feeling of warmth that comes from listening to the album; it’s accessible in a way that doesn’t seem contrived.
I wouldn’t expect The Appleseed Cast to play songs only from their new record, though. As longtime aficionados know, the group has been around for 16 years across eight studio albums, so fans should probably expect a couple of The Appleseed Cast’s classics to make it on the set list. Maybe even something from Peregrine?
The Appleseed cast brings with them fellow Lawrence, Kansas band Heartscape Landbreak, known for their unique experimental-folk music. Iowa City’s own Morning Exit is set to open the show.
