Elizabeth Moen’s moment
While in France trying to make friends, a 15-year-old Elizabeth Moen buried a language barrier beneath guitar chords and a rising voice. She returned to the United States with budding spirit and, after five more years, played her first show — an open mic at The Mill. At 21, she wrote her first original song. Moen has since become a staple of Iowa City’s music scene, cementing a place in the hearts of local music lovers that, at 24, is still surreal for her to hold.

Iowa City’s performers for RAGBRAI have been announced
The City of Iowa City has announced the musicians entertaining its visiting RAGBRAI riders on Friday, July 27. The Jayhawks, an alternative country-rock band from the Twin Cities, and Blitzen Trapper, a Portland-based experimental folk-rock group, are topping the bill.

Album Review: Elizabeth Moen — That’s All I Wanted
On her sophomore output, That’s All I Wanted, Elizabeth Moen ditches the acoustic guitar for a full ensemble of electric guitars, bass and percussion (and one piano ballad). Her record embraces the hollows of Luke Tweedy’s refurbished barn-turned-recording-studio at Flat Black Studios — she transfigures folk into an experience in the totality of instruments. But her vocals never shy away from the driver’s seat.

UNESCO City of Literature benefit to feature William Elliott Whitmore, Iris DeMent, the Recliners and more, all covering Bob Dylan
This Wheel’s on Fire, a benefit concert for the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, will be at the Englert Theater this Friday, April 28. Keeping in tune with the legacy of Bob Dylan in both music and literature, southeastern Iowan musicians will be performing exclusively Dylan covers from all eras of his discography — with the players reinterpreting the flavors and inflections of the legendary folk artist.
