Join the Million Robot March
In 1979, University of Iowa football coach Hayden Fry had the visiting team’s locker room walls painted pink. Fry said he did it because “pink is often found in girls’ bedrooms, and because of that some consider it a sissy color.” In 2005, UI doubled down by adding pink urinals, showers, floors and lockers. Many Hawkeye fans find it funny, while others see it as a leftover from a time when coaches motivated players by calling them “homo,” “girl” and in Fry’s own words, “sissy.”

Filming for Hannah Horvath’s first semester at the University of Iowa has already begun, and although the crew of HBO’s Girls haven’t made their way to Iowa City quite yet (a plan previously confirmed by director Jesse Peretz), they have been using a central Brooklyn neighborhood as an Iowa City stand-in. Slaughter City opens Thursday at the UI Theatre Building
The theatre has provided a forum for exploring labor issues ever since the heyday of the “workers’ theatre” movement in the 1920s and ’30s. Many plays during this period were influenced by the theories of German playwright Bertolt Brecht, who believed that theatre should engage audiences intellectually in order to inspire them to act after the curtain falls. In 1935, Clifford Odets ended his play Waiting for Lefty by having the actors urge the audience to leave the theatre shouting, “Strike! Strike!”
Girls director Jesse Peretz: ‘We are going to definitely go to Iowa City and we will be shooting some there’
It looks like the cast and crew of HBO’s Girls might be coming to Iowa City after all. Although the University of Iowa declined HBO’s request to film on…
The UI’s decision to deny HBO’s film request is a big mistake
I’m continually amazed at how Iowa City, as a community, is both full of pride for its many fine qualities, and at the same time insecure enough to jump on any moment of attention from the outside world as a sort of validating life-line.
