How exactly do you turn a campus of 30,000 students into a model of environmental sustainability? With seven key targets, The University of Iowa Office of Sustainability is working hard to achieve that goal. In October 2010, UI President Sally Mason signed the EPA Sustainability Partnership Program Agreement, which laid out distinct goals for the […]

EPX Animation & Gaming Con to feature industry pros
The video game industry is a diverse network of creative, design-oriented professionals whose names resonate with millions of video game fans across the world. For every J.J. Abrams, there is a Phil Fish. For every Guillermo Del Toro, there is a Jonathan Blow. Their keynotes draw thousands, and their philosophies on interactive design and player agency are incredibly complex for a hobby that’s often derided as a brainless exercise in destruction.
Art City: Exploring place at the Art Faculty Biennial
I find the opening question in David Dunlap’s Artist Statement to be the most promising guide for a consideration of what the faculty show shows us. He asks, “Who are we here?” The question makes a suggestive distinction, supposing, as it does, that there could be a difference between “who we are” and “who we are here.”
Reimagining Downtown: The next step
After a semester of anticipation the day was finally here where we met the man who was making this all possible: Tony Hsieh. We entered the morning in shark infested water, although to our surprise there wasn’t a lot of bloodshed.
Reimagining Downtown: Our day in photos
The following is part six in a series detailing the efforts of UI students as they work alongside influential Las Vegas entrepreneurs, including Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, to help reimagine the city’s downtown area. Today’s piece follows two students as they chronicle a busy day of “reimagining downtown.”
Our very own Etch A Sketch
Arriving in Las Vegas, we were greeted with a basket of goodies welcoming us to The Ogden and serving as a survival kit for the week. These goodies ranged from bananas and protein bars to ring pops and the March issue of the Zappos Employee Newsletter.
However, there was one “treat” that was left in this basket that immediately struck me: an Etch A Sketch. In a way, the Etch A Sketch can serve as a metaphorical representation for the manner in which Reimagining Downtown Fellows have worked to build a better downtown.
Reimagining Downtown Las Vegas: The way I see it
The following is part four in a series detailing the efforts of UI students as they work alongside influential Las Vegas entrepreneurs, including Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, to help reimagine the city’s downtown area.
Finding inspiration in Sin City
Numerous times over the past two days the Downtown Project workers have discussed the notion of dog years, the ideology that so much can get done in so little time. It is mind-blowing that you can collide with so many inspiring people in just twenty-four hours that you find yourself creatively exhausted, but in a great way.
UI students arrive in Las Vegas, ready to work
The following is part two in a series detailing the efforts of UI students as they work alongside influential Las Vegas entrepreneurs, including Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh, to help reimagine the city’s downtown area. Armed with a budget, powerful ideas and knowledgeable contacts, the group will be spending the week out West to turn their ideas into reality. Meanwhile, they’ll be writing about their experiences right here on Little Village Read part one for more details.
UI Students, Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh reimagine Las Vegas
Faced with a senior design project, Avery Bang and four of her civil and environmental engineering classmates proposed a radical idea to their professor: “What if we actually built something?” As Avery says now, “To see something from concept to implementation was not an experience I had ever had, and I was about to graduate as an engineer.”
ARTicle: A visit to Walnut Farms: Institute of Art. Agriculture and Burning Shopping Carts
It’s another hot Iowa City summer night and in the woods, the trees hang tired and droopy. Black leaves gently shiver against a cascade of smoke rising from a 10-foot-high bonfire. Sparks of flame jaunt into the sky and crackle alongside an endless drone of mating insects. A huge hand-painted mural covered in dreamlike poetic […]
Rotten Tomatoes University of Iowa Experience Reviews: – Switch – Up: My University of Iowa Experience (Tom Podczerwinski)
“Rotten Tomatoes” is a review writing and critiquing class being offered as a section of “Writing Commons: A Community of Writers” at the University of Iowa. For many of these authors, this is their first publication. Switch-Up: My University of Iowa Experience By Tom Podczerwinski I remember a time when I asked my friend about […]
