Iowa City and Cedar Rapids schools are closing in response to COVID-19
The Iowa City Community School District announced on Monday morning it will be closing its schools until April 13, in order to help limit the spread of coronavius. In an email to parents and district staff, Director of Community Relations Kristin Pedersen said the district made its decisions following the advice Gov. Kim Reynolds offered on Sunday night.

The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Society of Cedar Rapids — better known as SaPaDaPaSo — prides itself on never calling off its annual March 17 parade on account of bad weather. But this year, the organization has run into a problem bigger than cold or rain. SaPaDaPaSo announced on Wednesday morning it is canceling its 2020 parade out of coronavirus concerns.

Linn County and Cedar Rapids are looking for artists to create new work of public art. Linn County needs both indoor and outdoor works for the new Dr. Percy and Lileah Harris building, and Cedar Rapids needs for a “pocket plaza” that scheduled to open later this year.

965 Guitars closes its doors, Vinyl Emporium moving into the space this summer
965 Guitars has closed its doors after eight years, the store announced in a Facebook post on Jan. 31. The guitar store closing should not come as a surprise to Cedar Rapidians — owner Darwin Lindahl told the Gazette last year he was planning to end sales in January once his lease was up.

Hy-Vee stores in Iowa City, Coralville and Cedar Rapids will cut back hours starting next week
Hy-Vee stores in the Iowa City and Cedar Rapids area will no longer be open 24 hours starting on Monday, Feb. 10, the West Des Moines-based supermarket chain announced on Monday. Those stores will now be open from 5 a.m. to midnight. The store will be eliminating 24-hour service at almost all its 265 stores in eight Midwestern states.
