I’ve known Mike Carberry for 15 years, since our days working together on the Howard Dean campaign, and now I’ve worked with him on the Board of Supervisors for a year and a half. I know him to be a passionate environmentalist, a studious worker and a caring person. Mike is a real fighter. He fights for social justice, for economic justice, for racial justice and for environmental justice.

Letter to the editor: An endorsement from Zach Wahls’ seventh-grade teacher
With Zach’s passionate interest in community affairs, his educational background and his ability to connect with all groups and listen to community concerns, I see Zach as the strongest candidate to represent us in the state legislature. I think its essential for us as a community to give all the supports we can for this young passionate voice that will be our senator in Des Moines.
A field guide to voting in Iowa in 2018
Elections for governor in Iowa tend to be sedate, even dull, affairs, just like the man who won most of them over the last four decades, Terry Branstad. But things are different this year, so Little Village prepared this short guide for your hike to the ballot box.
Letter to the editor: Because of Zach Wahls, my son became the first openly gay Eagle Scout
I got to work alongside Zach in the thick of the campaign to overturn the Boy Scouts’ ban on gays. Zach is a remarkable young man: smart, articulate, someone who listens deeply and cares about improving the quality of life for everyone. He has a rare ability to find a path forward amongst parties who disagree.
Letter to the editor: Vote for Janice Weiner for Iowa Senate
In 1984, when Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro were running as the presidential and vice presidential Democratic candidates, the Iowa Democratic Party hired a young woman as their only Johnson County field organizer. Her job was to “get out the vote” for the Democrats. Her name was Janice Weiner, and she had just finished law school. I, too, worked on that effort.
‘Tully,’ written by UI grad Diablo Cody, is bound to be a classic film on motherhood
With “Tully,” a film still squarely in Diablo Cody’s wheelhouse, the University of Iowa alumna and 39-year-old mother of two drops (most of) the whimsy and tackles a special sense of fatigue and dissatisfaction. Think “Bad Moms” but with a lot more depression, breast pumping and literary references.
Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls is an inspirational leader
The choice in the Democratic primary for Senate district 37 on June 5 is not an easy one. We have strong candidates, with numerous varied strengths. I am writing to express my support for Zach Wahls. Zach’s passion, intelligence and dedication to issues such as mental health, social justice and supporting children and families with disabilities are, frankly, inspiring. I hope, prior to deciding how to cast your vote, you take an opportunity to meet Zach and discuss issues important to you.
Letter to the editor: John Norris is the leader Iowa needs
Iowa is in trouble. Recent conservative control is threatening Iowa values through mismanagement of health care, declining support for public education, disregard for Iowa’s environmental heritage, an assault on public employees, more cuts to the University of Iowa and Iowa State, and the likely loss of “backfill funds” that will lead to increased property taxes and cuts in services at the local level.
Letter to the editor: Let’s retire circuses as fundraising efforts
Unfortunately, there will be a circus that includes wild animals again this year at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. If people read my letter in advance, maybe some people will avoid it.
‘A Quiet Place,’ written and produced by Iowans, was made for thriller fans
A Quiet Place, floating on a cloud of high praise and a big opening weekend, has perhaps been overinflated. Nevertheless, the suspense-thriller, penned by Iowan filmmakers, is deliciously unsettling.
Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls is a voice for the voiceless
As parents of young adults with developmental disabilities, this has been a politically active year, during which we’ve met a number of our state senators, representatives and 2018 candidates. Here’s why Zach Wahls stands out, earning our enthusiastic support.
Letter to the editor: Support Zach Wahls on June 5
As a resident of Scott Precinct, I am proudly supporting Zach Wahls for Senate District 37.
