By Scott Hartley, Fairfield Trump detractors who decry their target buffoon as a rampant violator of tradition are deficient in political history. The orange POTUS has actually fallen tamely in line with Democrats of the Clinton era. When the former president sometimes known as “Slick Willy” gained the White House, Dems held both chambers of […]

Letter to the editor: Iowa should regulate marijuana like beer, wine and liquor
Ten states now regulate marijuana like alcohol. Iowa should follow their lead. Marijuana prohibition hasn’t worked and has hurt taxpayers and everyday Iowans. By legalizing and regulating the sale of marijuana to Iowa adults, we can refocus our criminal justice system on serious crime and expand substance abuse treatment programs.

Letter to the editor: The new Gillette ad proves social justice is for sale
Some are saying the ad is bad because it’s too political and paints a broad misogynistic stroke over all men. Some are saying it’s great for taking a stand and confronting a serious social issue. Both sides are wrong.

Open letter to the Iowa City Council: Do not change the Ped Mall benches
Dear Mayor and Iowa City Council members, I am opposed to making changes to the Ped Mall benches for the following reasons: 1. The city provided an opportunity for citizens’ input, at which time anybody that wanted to attend and see the proposed project could offer suggestions. 2. The city has opposed sleeping in the […]

An open letter to the Johnson County Board of Supervisors
Dear Supervisors, I wanted to share some thoughts about the meeting on Jan. 7. It seems clear that the Johnson County Agricultural Association has ignored your requests for them to do more of their own fundraising. This has been happening for several years. Per your discussion, you agreed that you have been enabling them. I […]

Letter to the editor: A reason to hate self-love
Scroll through your social media feeds in 2019 and one of the top mantras will undoubtedly be self-love. The idea is nothing new. At its core, self-love is supposed to be about regard for one’s own well-being, self-worth and happiness.

Johnson County residents requesting that the county stop giving public funding to the Johnson County Ag Association unless they eliminate the kids’ rodeo. The animals are terrified and subjected to physical and emotional abuse. I believe that children should be taught to have respect and compassion for animals.

Letter to the editor: The new farm bill does little to protect the future of agriculture
In an uncharacteristically productive event, Congress has passed the farm bill, the Agricultural Improvement Act of 2018. Ruminant commentators are asking: What’s missing in the farm bill? Their answers demonstrate that it pays little or no attention to preserving the environment where agriculture lives.

Letter to the editor: Ban the sale of puppy mill dogs in IC and CR
The Cedar Rapids and Iowa City city councils should take a leadership role in the state and ban the sale of puppy mill dogs from pet stores. As some of Iowa’s largest cities, our city councils have an opportunity to steer the conversation for the rest of the state.

Letter to the editor: Keep bow hunting out of Iowa City
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is clearly concerned with one thing only: to keep cashing in on the fees from hunting licenses. Council members from Iowa City approached the DNR on Thursday, Dec. 13 to ask for a permit to conduct a professional sharpshoot within city limits to control the deer population

Letter to the editor: Royceann Porter is the human rights leader Johnson County needs
In 2007, I had the honor of getting a human rights award from the Iowa City Human Rights Commission. Also that year, Royceann Porter received one of the Commission’s Human Rights awards. It was the first time I met Royceann, and I was impressed by her enthusiasm, dedication and drive.
