This will be my last Sandbox entry as the free studio resident at Public Space One, so I will leave you with a few of my favorite things from this time. One of the best moments was deciding to stay in my studio after the residency!

Sandbox: Experiencing, Gathering, Iowa City #2
After hours in the studio I needed some fresh, cool air. The red hues all around were speaking to me. So, I decided to make my walk a study in reds — being aware of the color and letting it soak in. The annual “Tree Huggers” project had already been installed downtown. This community project is still one of my favorite things about Iowa City. I loved this one in particular because the open knitting actually brought out the qualities of the bark, allowing the elements to be in conjunction with one another.

Sandbox: Zenzic Press
I have shown a lot of mixed media work so far, but at my core I am a printmaker. Even when I am working in other mediums, I think like a printmaker- in layers, with flattened perspectives, implementing varied editions, and always focusing on the ability to make multiples. I have always had a love for both printmaking and mixed media, but once I graduated I found it difficult to etch and print in my apartment (not for lack of trying though)!

Sandbox: Thuggoons!
I’ve known for awhile that being in community with other artists, and contributing to creative goals larger than myself, is one of the best things for my life and my art. Moving to Iowa City has been like a breath of fresh air. I’ve been blown away by the vibrancy of this town! The energy I have felt since moving here and working with Public Space One has been invigorating!

An impromptu beginning to my series, “Experiencing, Gathering, Iowa City” began last week. I started feeling dizzy as I drew closer to the Old Capitol Museum. The sprawling lawn looked incredibly enticing. So, I did what others have been doing for ages, I found a spot, laid down, looked up at the sky, felt the breeze, and played with a blade of grass.
