Hello, my name is Emily Jalinsky, and I am new to Iowa City!

When my husband and I came to visit during the winter of last year, I fell in love right away! It was a bitterly cold day with lots of snow, but the trees had knitted sweaters on them, which made me feel warm and cozy. I figured any town that had sweaters on their trees was a place I wanted to live! I also got the feeling that everyone was really friendly and chatty, which is a good thing since I am generally a little too friendly and a little too chatty right off the bat. I am a product of the Midwest and I am super excited to still be at the heart of it, in a lively town in Iowa!

psoneI am also the new Free Studio Artist in Residence at Public Space One!

I would like to use this blog as a way to delve into themes incorporated in my work and to discuss topics that are influencing me and my studio practice.

I also have a project in mind that will help me experience Iowa City in a meaningful way. I will visit specific places (maybe you can suggest your favorite spots!) and collect thoughts, photos, and objects from each place. I will then use these materials as a jumping point for other art endeavors (I am going to leave you with that and let it unfold as it happens).

Lastly, a blog is the perfect platform for documenting works in progress. I thrive on working between themes, series, pieces, and mediums. I will document the various projects I am working on during my residency and share any community arts projects I am involved in.

I snapped this photo on the first day of my residency. Check back for my next post about how the space has been changing, along with tidbits on my studio practice and the importance of cultivating a creative space!

Best,
Emily
