If you’ve been paying attention, I am a huge fan of both Sam and the Lonelyhearts, so when they ended up on a bill together at the Mill, I was super happy. I hope you were lucky enough to sit in on this musical delight. See what I saw below.
For all of you who breezed back into town for the start of this semester, I hope you were here early enough to catch this whimsical event that allowed us to pretend we were on a beach when we were […]
I try to never miss any show that involves these performers, especially at a venue as teeny and intimate as the lovely Red Avocado. The cozy back room was filled with an attentive, wine-sipping audience. Monadnoc cast a spell over […]
Last night’s White Lightning Wherehouse show combined the haunting loops of Olivia and her bass, the tongue-in-cheek acoustic guitar set of obchod, the punk rock(abilly) of Mr Hide, and the effervescent violinist Skye Carrasco, joined by the heavy drums of Brad Highnam and enchanting sitar of Luther Bangert.
I counted five instruments impressively played by Cheyenne on stage at the Mill this past Thursday – guitar, banjo, violin, drums and keyboard. She created a confectionery of soothing guitar and thoughtful lyrics that made me want to curl up in a booth and just listen instead of jumping around taking photos.
I had no idea what I was in for when I showed up to the midnight show at the White Lightning Wherehouse under a full moon last night. I knew this much: Old Scratch was performing along with the amazing, ever-changing lineup of Cirque Stupendo. I stepped into the Wherehouse to find Old Scratch bathed in green light, making their painted faces seem eerily inhuman…
I will spare you my usual gushing over Will Whitmore’s witty and mischievously uplifting lyrics, intoxicating melodies, and unmatched stage presence. Instead, I will say that his free performance in the Ped Mall on Saturday evening was everything you’d expect from the inimitable performer. That man can also cover a song like nobody’s business.
No matter how old I get, some things will never stop being fun. Cirque Stupendo & Dr. Eli Calico’s Medicine Show is one of those things. Even as I quickly approach 30, I can still be caught in childlike awe when presented with jugglers, belly dancing, singing saws, hula hooping, and accordion players on wheels.
On Friday Night, the Mill hosted Sam Locke Ward’s release party for his new album, “Barely Regal Beagles” and the kickoff for his west coast tour with the unparalleled Simon Joyner. Joining Sam was a lineup of one-man-acts including Douglas Kramer Nye, Ed Gray and Alex Body.
Thanks to Kent for showcasing my shots with his Lonelyhearts audio in his previous post. Shame on my forgetfulness; I didn’t include shots of the openers. Here are the rest from the most recent Tuesday Night Social Club at the Mill.
I am a sucker for a road trip, even just a little one, so it took no convincing to get me to trek to the Mews for Iowa City’s Lonelyhearts. They opened for Ames’ much-talked-about band, the Poison Control Center, which I regret I didn’t get to hear play. As always, I had my camera in tow and fired off a few shots of the always-enjoyable Lonelyhearts.
Who doesn’t love a couple good midweek shows at the Mill? It’s the perfect excuse to go out for a few beers and great live music. The Mill’s free Tuesday Night Social Club featured Centaur Noir, Skye Carrasco, as well as Mondo Drag, who happened to be starting their 4-month tour of the midwest and east coast.
