For all of you who breezed back into town for the start of this semester, I hope you were here early enough to catch this whimsical event that allowed us to pretend we were on a beach when we were really on Iowa Avenue. Sand in the City brought together teams of local businesses, organizations, architects and professional sand sculptors to compete, as 200 tons of sand was dumped on Iowa Avenue between Linn Street and Dubuque Street. The event, sponsored by Bank of the West, was put together to raise money for Summer of the Arts, the organization that brings you loads of things to do in the summer, like Jazz Fest, Arts Fest and the free music series on Friday and Saturday nights. Attendees were able to vote for their favorites by contributing “sand” dollars towards the team of their choosing. Also included in this event was an open sand pit for the kiddos to dig around in, a dunk tank, live music and the usual Culinary Row, featuring some of the best eats in town. I was there to capture some images from each day of the event, rain and shine.
