Put a fork in me, I’m done. I’ve seen the wear and tear on the Mission Creek Brain Trust and Little Village Cadre — in particular, I ran into Andre in front of the Yacht Club about 5:30PM, and he looked like he’d been kept awake for a week by aliens shouting insults in his […]
Things to do in Iowa City
Mission Creek 2010: 4/2/10 (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)
Friday night was another epic evening in Iowa City. Unfortunately there isn’t much here yet from the early short sets from 6-8 pm, Dawn’s at Dusk. This was actually a highlight of the evening. about 10 different acts, each doing a ten minute set, often with no set up in between, this was a very […]
Les Dames du Burlesque with Cirque Stupendo
Even the word coming off of someone’s lips in a casual conversation–burlesque–drips like satin off the shoulder. Â Its an old fashioned word, one that my Nana would have used only in one of her raciest jokes to her closest girlfriends. Â Somehow through its mythology I only had a vague notion of this kind of performance. […]

The Mission Creek Experience, Days Three and Four
We’re just past the Mission Creek Festival’s halfway point, and the realization that Iowa City will soon return to its normal non-festival routine is a sad one. To be fair, there’s never a shortage of live music to see in our beloved city, but Mission Creek grabbed an adrenaline shot and slammed it straight into the heart of Iowa City.
Apologies to Mr Bazan
Dear Mr. Bazan, I wanted to come to your show because I just can’t make up my mind about you. Sometimes I love you, sometimes I find you grating and self-indulgent. But last night I realized that in the face of historic acts like Acid Mothers Temple and Bomb Squad, and after getting Xiu Xiu […]
Seth Wenger, Constie Brown & Zoe Brown @ RSVP
Found out about this morning on Facebook — hey! social media works!!! ‘Brown’ is a musically evocative name in Iowa City. To make too much of Zoe & Constie’s parentage takes away from the loveliness of this musical performance with Seth Wenger. This is straight up homestyle front parlor folk music, presented in RSVP, surrounded […]
SHOCKWAVES
It was the kind of animal insanity that takes quiet care to craft. Making people lose their minds with sound isn’t a matter of turning it up to eleven, but of leading them down a primrose path until all of a sudden they look around and haven’t got a clue how they ended up here.
4/1 – PE/BOMB SQUAD/ACID MOTHER TEMPLE
There are nights out, there are nights out that melt your face off, and then there’s last night, which was an alien-chest-burster, singularity event. The Public Enemy “Fear Of A Black Planet” lecture event was a huge deal from me. As I told Chuck D afterwards, “It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us […]
