With everything from pie contests to monster trucks, the 90th annual Johnson County Fair starts on Sunday
The 90th annual Johnson County Fair will bring ugly cakes, excellent pies and monster trucks to Johnson County Fairgrounds starting on Sunday, July 21. The fair run through Wednesday night, and will conclude with a concert by Spencer, Iowa’s Casey Muessigmann, who appeared on season three of NBC’s The Voice, as well as the traditional fireworks display.
Letter to the editor: Don’t support animal abuse with our taxes
Johnson County residents requesting that the county stop giving public funding to the Johnson County Ag Association unless they eliminate the kids’ rodeo. The animals are terrified and subjected to physical and emotional abuse. I believe that children should be taught to have respect and compassion for animals.

Johnson County gives the Johnson County Fair a lot of money every year. This year it was $103,000. That is taxpayer money. They say the money is so the fair and parking there are free and it pays for the deputies who direct traffic. To me, this is endorsing and supporting the fair. I am strongly opposed to any support or endorsement of a fair that includes children abusing animals for entertainment.

The midway is cleared and still. The ice cream is gone. The barns and buildings are closed. It was another great year for the Johnson County Fair. And so it was for the ever popular annual Corn Poll of the People’s Coalition (Iowa Physicians for Social Responsibility, 100Grannies for a Livable Future, Veterans For Peace and PEACE Iowa) in Building B. This year’s fairgoers were questioned about their concerns for a livable future.
