Album Review: Mock Identity — Paradise
For many eastern Iowans, your foot in the door to Mock Identity, a new band formed just last winter, is bassist Joshua David Hoffman, formerly of Supersonic Piss, which bowed out of the Iowa City scene in 2013. The band’s farewell blog entry, posted just under five years ago, indicated that Hoffman was off to new endeavors in D.C. — there, he built the connections that led to this new act’s formation, and resulted in Paradise, a debut that is more than Iowa City fans could have hoped for.

Des Moines musician Lily Detaeye enjoys a double life as a UI junior
Lily Detaeye, a 20-year-old singer/songwriter from Des Moines, is currently a Junior at the University of Iowa and doubles as a musician at Station One Records in Des Moines. She’s been touring the midwest all summer, and will hit her second home, Iowa City, on June 8th. She’ll perform at the Yacht Club at 9 p.m. Tickets are $7.

Alisabeth Von Presley will bring her ‘pink-painted world’ to Iowa City Pride Fest
When Alisabeth Von Presley was a little girl, she believed she was the reincarnation of Elvis. She’d perform in front of a mirror, singing into her dad’s hairbrush. The 30-year-old entertainer now embodies the King of Rock and Roll in other ways, from her name — changed from Caraway to Von Presley — to the Elvis portrait tattooed on her left forearm. She’s taken up guitar, and often performs in glam, eye-catching outfits that harken back to Elvis’ sequined jumpsuits.

Five questions with Magic Giant’s Zambricki Li
Magic Giant is a Los Angeles-based trio forged on the festival scene (including the 2018 lineup of Coachella) with a distinctly positive alt-pop sound. They’re represented by the label Concord — also the parent label of St. Vincent and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats — and recorded most their debut album, In the Wind, outdoors as they toured the country. Magic Giant released an acoustic version of In the Wind earlier this year.

Album Review: Commanders — Stones, Stooges and Spacemen
Although Iowa City band Commanders is already revving up some new tunes with a new bassist, their 2017 release Stones, Stooges and Spacemen is well overdue for attention in this space. With its brash title, the album invokes some of the greatest acts in ’60s and ’70s rock and roll and then evokes them throughout with a heavy dose of what Mick Jagger, Iggy Pop and David Bowie had most in common: strut.

Exclusive track: Elizabeth Moen and her band cover ‘I Put a Spell on You’
Elizabeth Moen and her bandmates — Justin LeDuc, Blake Shaw and Dan Padley — were out at Flat Black Studios earlier this month, recording tracks for their second LP, which they expect to release next spring. In between takes, they decided to have a little Halloween fun with the classic 1956 track “I Put a Spell on You.”
