Beer, Hotdogs and Explosives – Show Preview: Barnstormer IV – July 4, 2010 – Maquoketa, IA

When Joseph Pope, Nathaniel Rateliff’s touring guitarist, got offstage after a recent show
at the Mill, he said he thought his set went well—well, he qualified, for a non-barn show.
Pope had just come off a week of performing in 19th-century barns throughout rural Iowa,
Illinois, and Wisconsin, as part of Daytrotter’s latest Barnstormer tour.

Iowa City Weekender: June 24-27

Like many adults, I often close my eyes very hard, squeeze’em shut for a long time, cover my ears and scream until I am convinced on a core level that I am entitled to a trip to the swimming pool.

The nice thing is, here in campus town it hardly takes any time at all. With so many people operating on the academic calendar, the school’s-out-for-summer attitude is gloriously contagious, and yes I will take seconds.

Raising the Dead

June/July 2010~ The Grateful Dead need to be rescued. Rescued from paunchy, balding nostalgia, rescued from the tribute bands, rescued from the scumbags who sold drugs in the parking lot at their concerts. Most of all, they need to be rescued from their hyper-recorded live career, spinning the same fifty songs again and again like […]

UR Here: Challenging Change

In the raging underage/binge drinking debate in Iowa City, a couple of familiar refrains keep singing: “You can’t change the drinking culture,” and “Downtown Iowa City’s economy will collapse,” the latter with various subpoints (the downtown economy is heavily bar-dependent, so there will be mass vacant storefronts, many jobs will be lost, tax revenue will plummet, etc., etc.). These talking points are repeated ad infinitum by many, but especially the student population. Underlying both of these arguments is a fundamental belief that things cannot change from their current state. The universe always tells us that nothing is further from the truth.
