Greetings Iowa City and Thank You for this sun. Anybody get flooded? Yup. Sucks? Yeah. 🙁
THURSDAY
Health Screenings | Emma Goldman Clinic | 3-7 pm | FREE
A great reason to support this weekend’s Pride festivities is to celebrate this aspect of GLBT culture: Few communities do more to keep the conversation alive. You know what conversation I’m talking about. (Whispers) The sexual health conversation? Yep. Everyone agrees you should get tested, but have you? This afternoon you can get tested for free at the Emma Goldman Clinic, from 3-7 pm.
View Facebook event page for details.
3 bands, 3 bucks | Gabes | 9 pm | $3
Are you ready for this? I’m not. The stage, perhaps the entire upstairs, is going to collapse beneath the weight of all this IC cred:
Liberty Leg
Acoustic Guillotine
The Old Man
3 bands, for $3. Go deep.
FRIDAY
Iowa City Pride Patio Party | Sheraton Inn Patio (2nd Floor) | 6:30 pm | FREE
Pride weekend kicks off on the Sheraton’s 2nd Floor patio, with free apps, a cash bar, and… the Diplomats of Solid Sound, featuring the Diplomettes. That’s right, organist Nate Basinger is back in town from Austin, and the inimitable Kathy Ruestow is in from Chicago. Fun!
Okay, so the Diplomats aren’t playing the party directly, they’re playing the Friday Night Concert Series, right in front of the Sheraton. Still sweet.
If Share is doing the bar, I recommend the Moscow Mule – served in a real copper mug!
Chicago Samba w Bossa Maior | The Mill | 8:00 | $8
Rain or shine, you will be feeling the ocean breeze at the Mill as seasoned champions Chicago Samba deliver the brasilero omni-rhythmic-ism. To sweeten the pot, they are joined by Iowa City’s own Bossa Maior. If you loved Grupo Fantasma last week, head back to the Mill for some sounds from farther south (via Chicago) – la Samba.
SATURDAY
Event: High of 89, 20% chance of rain | Location: In the water | Time: You time | Price: a few skin cells
This Saturday it’s all cannon ball – hit up a local watering hole and get your vitamin sun, ’cause rain? We don’t need no stinkin’ rain.
