I try to collect as much Iowa City music as I possibly can. When I can’t buy a record at a show, I scour Bandcamp pages for the ones I don’t have yet. I spend hours creating and editing mixes of my favorite songs for my friends and family—people who aren’t familiar with the Iowa City […]

On the Beat: Summer listening guide
Summer in the Clubs! Live Music Venue GUIDE Iowa City is what is known in the biz as a ‘small market.’ Acts on national tours book shows in Iowa City based on it’s geographical position within a half-day’s drive of Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis and Kansas City—it’s a great place to shoehorn a show in […]
Show Photos: Caterwaulla, Skye Carrasco, Liberty Leg, White Mystery @ Gabe’s – 3/2
Caterwaulla, Skye, Liberty Leg and those crazy redheads that make up White Mystery rocked my socks off Friday night. I felt like it was my official kickoff to the very musical month of March. Caterwaulla is the youngest of the acts, but don’t let the newness fool you…they pack a punch. Their lead singer, Lauren […]

Show Photos: Paleo, Lonelyhearts, Brooks Strause, Kurt Vile @ the Mill – 4/3
In general, I don’t drink – but I am certainly going to have a Mission Creek hangover. Despite my exhaustion, tinnitus and many hours spent looking over and over at images I captured, I made it to the Mill again tonight.
Show Photos: Skye Carrasco @ PS1 – 4/1
Skye stopped in to the KRUI camp at Public Space One on Friday to give folks a taste of what they’d be getting at the Mill later that night. Surrounded by soft, glowing fluorescent hatchets, (part of the art exhibit presently on display) Skye wove a tapestry of sound with her violin and her stunning voice.
