As demonstrated by all the funky shops, restaurants, and people around town, Iowa City has multicultural tastes. Our local bands are interesting, and our clubs bring in acts from far-flung places to meet those tastes. St. Lucia is 2600 miles away from IC, so that qualifies as far-flung in my atlas. Taj Weekes & Adowa brought some of the culture of St. Lucia all the way to Iowa, and Tribal Momentum showed off a bit of Iowa City’s own crazy culture.

Show Photos: Tribal Momentum on Little Village Live – 8/10
Another Wednesday at PS1 brought another great band to the KRUI airwaves. This week, I had the pleasure of hearing the Tribal Momentum. This four-piece reminded me of some of the great jam bands of the late 90s, but I wouldn’t label them as a jam band proper. They’re better than that.
Ex-Action Model, The Binary Marketing Show, Dream Thieves, Chaircrusher @ Blue Moose 2011-08-04
It’s me, Kent Williams, your Little Village Arts & Entertainment Editor. When I’m not trying to come up with Le Mot Juste to describe local music CDs, I make music of my own under the regrettable moniker Chaircrusher. I got to play live Thursday at the Blue Moose Tap House, opening for Dream Thieves, Binary […]
The Stage: Summer Takes a Bow
For reasons known only to God and the bureaucrats, school starts in Iowa City in August instead of waiting decently until after Labor Day. Despite the resumption of scholarly activity, however, August is very much the dog days in this town. The novelties of summer–the outdoor concerts and splashing in the fountain, the sudden increase […]
On the Beat: Counting down
Seemingly no one hates Counting Crows more than Guided by Voices frontman Robert Pollard. An oft-cited gem from his 2005 stage-banter album, Relaxation of the Asshole, goes something like this: “I wanna know how the guy from the Counting Crows used to fuck everybody from Friends? How the fuck’d he do it? He’s an ugly […]
Watch Shipbuilding Co. at The Yacht Club
Shipbuilding Co. stopped by The Yacht Club this weekend to play us some songs, and we have some lovely video to share. The Indie rock group played the final set of the night after local group Shame Train finished up a set of their own, and although Iowa City was experiencing flood-like conditions at the time, a host of music fans were in attendance to welcome our friends from the West.
Watch Skye Carrasco on Little Village Live
Last week’s episode of Little Village Live featured local musician Skye Carrasco, marking her second appearance on the show (much to our benefit). Carrasco is back in Iowa City after spending some time writing songs in Portland, Ore., and we couldn’t be happier to have this talented artist in our midst once again.
Little Village's Top Ten Local Albums of 2011 (Thus Far)
If you find yourself marking the calender just waiting for the big regional and national acts to pass through (or near), you may be missing all the wonderful music right under your very nose. Consider this a primer.
Show Photos: Sam Locke Ward on Little Village Live – 7/13
Sam Locke Ward made his second appearance on Little Village Live this past week. Like all of Sam’s shows, there was no telling what he was going to do once the mic was on.
Video: Samuel Locke Ward on Little Village Live, 7/13/11
This week on Little Village Live, local favorite Samuel Locke Ward played a full set and, as it turns out, we’re still picking up jaws off the floor. This episode marked Ward’s second appearance on the show, having played a unique set back in April 2010 consisting of two 20-minute chunks of non-stop acoustic rock.
Video: The Box Flower on Little Village Live
Last week, Little Village Live hosted Daniel Payne, also known as The Box Flower, a title reserved for his solo projects. You may have already seen Payne perform as part of the local music group Replacing the Robots, who played their final show in June. He also runs the boards at Public Space One, produces […]
