There are eight events in this week’s Weekender, but only two of them are music. You should see what the other six are. It will be a treat for the less musically inclined of you.
Gabe’s Iowa City
Show Photos: Blue Moose Halloween Show: Cop Bar, HOTT, Middleagers from Mars – 10.29
Occassionally, I can’t settle for only being in one place at any given time, and it’s usually on nights when there is more than one awesome show in this town. Last weekend I ping-ponged back and forth between Gabe’s Halloween show and the one at the Blue Moose. I don’t play favorites, so lemme just say that the debacle at the Blue Moose was one of great fury, suited to rock the socks off of anybody.
Show Photos: Gabe's Halloween Show: Caterwaulla, Five in a Hand, Item 9 & the Mad Hatters – 10.29
While this week has gotten away from me, Halloween weekend didn’t. I did double-duty on Saturday night and this was one of the shows I was lucky enough to catch. Caterwaulla, Five in a Hand and Item 9 & the Mad Hatters put on a mind-blowing show complete with costumes, covers and laser lights.
Iowa City Weekender: October 27-29 // Halloween Special
This week, you get two Weekenders for the price of one, assuming that you actually paid to read this column. One is a regular version. The other is a digest of all the Halloween events. Use one or both. The choice is yours alone.
Show Preview: Rubblebucket, 10/17/11 at Gabe’s
After blowing the lid off the joint with their epic performance on the first night of Mission Creek last March, Rubblebucket is making its triumphant return to Iowa City tomorrow, October 17th, at Gabe’s.
Iowa City Weekender: October 6-8
If there was ever a time to paraphrase Vashti Bunyan, it would be now as it’s going to be just another diamond weekend.
Iowa City Weekender: September 29-October 1
Music is on display in all forms this weekend. It will blow your mind, accompany a silent German film, provide an outlet for confused youth, and give you something to dance to arrhythmically while drunk.
Iowa City Weekender: September 15-17
What do a Canadian electro-pop group, a keg, a reference to Double Dare, Steely Dan, bicycles, zombies, and community building have in common? I’ll give you a hint: it’s not R. Kelly.
Iowa City Weekender: Labor Day Weekend
It’s Labor Day weekend, and there is nothing but pure relaxation coming to you. Feel the breezes.
Video: The Box Flower on Little Village Live
Last week, Little Village Live hosted Daniel Payne, also known as The Box Flower, a title reserved for his solo projects. You may have already seen Payne perform as part of the local music group Replacing the Robots, who played their final show in June. He also runs the boards at Public Space One, produces […]
Show Photos: Techno Lincoln and the Technicolor Union – 6/20
I go to a lot of shows. They range from pained to good to great, and some defy description. This show was in the third category but not at all in an unfortunate sense. Techno Lincoln and the Technicolor Union flabbergasted me with their rock opera…a spectacle of costumes, fight scenes, and reggae renditions of classic rock songs.
Iowa City Weekender: June 9-11
Greg Brown plays intimately. The Lonelyhearts and Roommate play publicly. The CircUS will paint your face and Dreamwell may make you do the opposite.
