Rubblebucket | Gabe’s | 10.17.2011 | $10 Advance $12 Day of Show | 19+ | Doors: 8:00 pm | Show: 9:00 pm
After blowing the lid off the joint with their epic performance on the first night of Mission Creek last March, Rubblebucket is making its triumphant return to Iowa City tomorrow, October 17th at Gabe’s.
They’ve been getting rave reviews everywhere they’ve played and music critics nationwide can’t say enough good things about the band, either.
This Brooklyn-based group has a one-of-a-kind horn-heavy sound mixed with wistful, soulful vocals provided by lead singer Kalmia Traver who, after I saw them play last March, I described as “the love child of Natalie Merchant and Bjork except without the crazy.”
Don’t mistake their lyricism for a lack of power, though. This eight-person group has the strength of a freight train on many of their songs, except imminently more danceable, and they always leave you feeling good.
And dance, they do, after their show last March several of the members of the band changed shirts before I interviewed them as they had sweated through what they wore on stage.
I don’t know if you’ll need a change of clothes after the show or not, but I know for certain that if you’re there you’ll be dancing too.
Tune in to KRUI tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. to hear some tracks, listen to an interview with the band hosted by yours truly, and get a chance to win a pair of tickets to the show.
