The city of Cedar Rapids has seen a number of important upgrades over the past couple of years. If it has been a while since your last visit, here are a few…
Cedar Rapids
Canadian folkies The Bros. Landreth and Jordan Klassen play this Thursday at CSPS
You’ve heard of Anglophiles and Francophiles, but have you ever heard of a Canadaphile? Assuming you love our neighbors to the north (because who doesn’t?)…
Cedar Rapids’ Super Fresh Culture Fest enters its third year
On a scale of 1 to 10, how “fresh” would you say you are? 1 being “not fresh at all” and 10 being “super fresh?” If you answered with any number other than 10, you need to check out the Super Fresh Culture Fest in Cedar Rapids, coming up this Saturday. Entering its third year, […]

Spend this Friday with Madeleine Albright
Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will visit the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library this weekend in celebration of the newly opened exhibit, “Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Collection.” The travelling exhibition runs from May 11 through October 27. Album Review: Imperfekt – Tunes For Improvement
Imperfekt Tunes For Improvement MicHandRecordings.com Imperfekt is a hip-hop MC that produces his own beats. Though locally there are several examples—Rahlan Kay and Coolzey come to mind—it isn’t a common thing. MCs and producers tend to specialize, but in the decidedly un-hip-hop environment of Iowa, perhaps these guys feel like they’re on their own and […]
On the Beat: Take a chance
As I sat at the Pressed And concert at the Mill on Feb. 7, I watched a couple of young men rock the stage. “Rock” might be inaccurate as they were sitting cross-legged for the show. Anyway, the spacey, hip-hop styled instrumental music that the two were making live fit well with the videos of […]
Classing Up Bohemia
New Bohemia is beginning to show signs of life. On the corner of 12th Street, there are the Parlor City Pub, Capone’s Restaurant and the Chrome Horse Saloon, making the neighborhood a livelier nighttime destination than moribund Downtown Cedar Rapids a mile to the north. With the renovation of the CSPS building, New Bohemia is becoming a new alternative cultural hub for Cedar Rapids.
Event Preview: Landfall Festival of World Music 9/22-25, Sponsored by Little Village!

From the mind-altering, polyphonic a capella of Corsican quartet Barbara Fortuna to the 12-piece Romanian gypsy punk of Mahala Rai Banda, and featuring Kenyan drum ensemble Kenge Kenge, dance music from Colombia’s Cimarrón and Brooklyn-based Nation Beat, Landfall is totally worth the trip up to CR this weekend.
Iowa City Weekender – October 24-26
The weekend schedules are filling up again. In no small part because a number of CR based arts orgs are back from the flood. Likewise, Parkview Terrace, where I’ve owned an unoccupied house for six months is filling up again. My house is almost done and I’m getting ready to move this weekend. IT feels […]
