Like every year, city governments are celebrating the beginning of American independent governance by closing down for the day. (Although garbage pick-up will continue on its normal schedule in Cedar Rapids). But all the cities in the CRANDIC (the greater Cedar Rapids and Iowa City area) will be sponsoring events. Protesters will gather in Cedar Rapids to push for the reunification of migrant families
On Saturday, there will be rallies protesting in more than 620 cities across the country, including Iowa City and Cedar Rapids, to protest the Trump administration treatment of migrants arriving at the U.S. border with Mexico. The Families Belong Together protests were originally inspired by the administration’s policy of taking children away from their families, and interring them in separate facilities.
Hike for Healthcare: Protesting Republican attempts to kill the Affordable Care Act
Political activists and other Iowans upset about Republican health care policies will be gathering in Cedar Rapids at noon for the Hike for Healthcare. At the same time protesters in Cedar Rapids are marching the half-mile from the corner to 8th Ave and 2nd Street, SE, to Rep. Rod Blum’s office, there will also be protests at Blum’s offices in Cedar Falls and Dubuque, as well as at Rep. David Young’s Des Moines office.

Vigil in Cedar Rapids on Monday evening to support families affected by the Mt. Pleasant ICE raid
There will be a vigil in Cedar Rapids in support of the families of the 32 workers who were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Wednesday. The vigil, which starts at 5 p.m., will be held in front of Sen. Chuck Grassley’s regional office 111 7th Ave SE.
