With Zach’s passionate interest in community affairs, his educational background and his ability to connect with all groups and listen to community concerns, I see Zach as the strongest candidate to represent us in the state legislature. I think its essential for us as a community to give all the supports we can for this young passionate voice that will be our senator in Des Moines.
Letters
Letter to the editor: Because of Zach Wahls, my son became the first openly gay Eagle Scout
I got to work alongside Zach in the thick of the campaign to overturn the Boy Scouts’ ban on gays. Zach is a remarkable young man: smart, articulate, someone who listens deeply and cares about improving the quality of life for everyone. He has a rare ability to find a path forward amongst parties who disagree.
Letter to the editor: Vote for Janice Weiner for Iowa Senate
In 1984, when Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro were running as the presidential and vice presidential Democratic candidates, the Iowa Democratic Party hired a young woman as their only Johnson County field organizer. Her job was to “get out the vote” for the Democrats. Her name was Janice Weiner, and she had just finished law school. I, too, worked on that effort.
Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls is an inspirational leader
The choice in the Democratic primary for Senate district 37 on June 5 is not an easy one. We have strong candidates, with numerous varied strengths. I am writing to express my support for Zach Wahls. Zach’s passion, intelligence and dedication to issues such as mental health, social justice and supporting children and families with disabilities are, frankly, inspiring. I hope, prior to deciding how to cast your vote, you take an opportunity to meet Zach and discuss issues important to you.
Letter to the editor: John Norris is the leader Iowa needs
Iowa is in trouble. Recent conservative control is threatening Iowa values through mismanagement of health care, declining support for public education, disregard for Iowa’s environmental heritage, an assault on public employees, more cuts to the University of Iowa and Iowa State, and the likely loss of “backfill funds” that will lead to increased property taxes and cuts in services at the local level.
Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls is a bright future for Iowa
We are writing to support Zach Wahls’ candidacy for Iowa Senate. Zach grew up in our neighborhood, attended the same schools as our children, and his family still lives nearby. Zach has been an active community advocate for many years. At a young age he showed courage, maturity, and conviction addressing the Iowa Legislature, standing up to discrimination, and making a real difference in the lives of many Iowans who were facing inequity.
Letter to the editor: Let’s retire circuses as fundraising efforts
Unfortunately, there will be a circus that includes wild animals again this year at the Johnson County Fairgrounds. If people read my letter in advance, maybe some people will avoid it.
Letter to the editor: Zach Wahls is a voice for the voiceless
As parents of young adults with developmental disabilities, this has been a politically active year, during which we’ve met a number of our state senators, representatives and 2018 candidates. Here’s why Zach Wahls stands out, earning our enthusiastic support.
Letter to the editor: Support Zach Wahls on June 5
As a resident of Scott Precinct, I am proudly supporting Zach Wahls for Senate District 37.
Letter to the editor: The meaning of community
Since 1971, the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic has worked hard to represent the best qualities of our community: dignity, kindness, respect and the willingness to work together to make things better for others.
Letter to the editor: Finding help for postpartum depression
I knew that postpartum depression was a possibility when I became a mom five years ago. But I didn’t know how hard it would be to find help.
Letter to the editor: Mayors to state legislators: Our communities depend on the $3.4 million in backfill payments
Passing the budgetary problem to local governments may be an easy way out for our state’s elected leaders. But make no mistake. Such action will hit close to home, not just in our three cities but in cities, counties and schools of all sizes throughout the entire state.
