We are halfway through Mission Creek, and while our ears may be in a perpetual state of ringing, our livers may be hurting, and we are tired–it’s now the weekend, so we have no excuses to not take advantage of the almost overwhelming amount of sweet stuff happening the next couple days.
Starting at 5:00 p.m., there is a free show at Gabe’s with American Honey. They’re a bluesy, folky, jazzy group out of Tallahassee, and I’ve been enjoying their live B-Vibes album all morning.
Simultaneously, KRUI is hosting a reception a Public Space Z to kick off, “On the Air: 29 Years of KRUI.” The show features memorabilia collected throughout the station’s history, and Iowa City singer-songwriters Megan Buick and Dana T will be performing.
Afterward, I’ll be heading to The Englert for Janeane Garofalo (8:00 p.m.) and Tig Notaro (9:15 p.m.). If you aren’t familiar with Tig Notaro, check out Tig Notaro Live (which somehow manages to both heartbreaking and extremely funny) or her spot on Conan’s After Hours Stand-Up Series (seen below).
After this much needed break from high decibel assault, I’ll be heading to the Blue Moose Tap House. Tonight will be the first night of Mission Creek in which I will not be closing down Gabes, and as much as I love it there, I’m excited for a change of scenery. Emperors Club is set to take the stage at 10:00 p.m., and if you haven’t been listening to their new album, Killer Companion, which is still streaming today from their website, you’re missing out! It has been stuck in my head all week, and it’s definitely worth a listen (or 20!) before they play tonight.
I’m also planning on sticking around for Divine Fits at 11:00 p.m. (see our interview for more info).
Lastly, I wish I could be in two places at once, but alas, I am only human. And a barely functioning one at that. Country-folk singer-songwriter Joe Pug will be taking the stage at The Mill about the same time as the Divine Fits at Blue Moose. Flip a coin, or maybe try to catch half of each set. Either way, tonight will rule.
