The month of May has come, and, while this means nothing for the various working stiffs in Iowa City, it does signal one of my favorite times of the year: the exodus of most of the undergrads and the summer slowdown. Everyone’s more relaxed, restaurants don’t have lines and I get free reign of Brothers […]

Your guide to Mission Creek: Saturday
It’s Day five of Mission Creek, and hopefully everyone had the chance to sleep in a bit this morning and recharge. I know I feel better after logging a full eight hours, which is extra necessary considering today is quite the literary, food, and music puzzle.
Your Guide to Mission Creek: Friday
We are halfway through Mission Creek, and while our ears may be in a perpetual state of ringing, our livers may be hurting, and we are tired–it’s now the weekend, so we have no excuses to not take advantage of the almost overwhelming amount of sweet stuff happening the next couple days.
Show Photos: Mission Creek day one
As I write this, it’s after 2:00 a.m. and I’m finally home after a heart-pounding night listening to some fantastic acts and dancing with a camera in my hand. Tonight was only supposed to be the kickoff to the festival, and it was wildly good, so I can’t wait to see how much better it […]

Your guide to Mission Creek: Tuesday
Each day of Mission Creek I’ll be sharing my itinerary, carefully curated to maximize fun with you all. Tonight starts with a pork dinner at Motley Cow (6:00 p.m.) and a reading at Prairie Lights (7:00 p.m.), featuring Roxane Gay, who is the genre-mixing, Haitian-diaspora-discussing author of Ayiti (2011), and Iowa City’s John D’Agata. I’ll still be in class at this point, but you should go and make me jealous!
Show Photos: KRUI Pre-Mission Creek Party
Happy Mission Creek Week, everybody! For the third year in a row, I’m going to be running crazy from venue to venue all week, bringing the sights of each night to you. So let’s kick off the photo extravaganza with the KRUI Pre-Mission Creek Party at the Mill. This is a short slideshow, but there’s […]
Slip Silo says farewell
Since forming in 2008, electric jazz group Slip Silo has played well over a hundred shows around Iowa City and across the Midwest.
Even if you’ve never had a chance to see them perform, it’s likely that you’ve stumbled upon a flyer or two if you’ve spent any time outdoors in the last half-decade. These flyers, these shows have all been part of Iowa City’s local music landscape for longer than most bands can boast, and tomorrow night at The Mill, Slip Silo will bring this four-piece legacy to a close with one final show.
Mac DeMarco playing tonight at The Mill
Although events in Iowa City have slowed considerably in light of student spring break, The Mill is looking out for our entertainment needs with an excellent lineup tonight. Montreal-based artist Mac DeMarco will be playing alongside Calvin Love and Naomi Punk.
Style Points: When Les Dames and IC Kings collide
Iowa City’s own drag queen group, IC Kings, recently joined forces with Les Dames Burlesque d’Iowa City for a one-night gig at the Mill. In their collaborative acts, the Kings looked even more “Kingly” standing next to the ultra-feminine expressions of Les Dames. Painstakingly creating their male expressions from scratch in daring and original ways, as one audience member remarked, during the large group numbers it was easy to forget that it was, in fact, all female performers on stage.
On The Beat: Old school’s back in session
By the time that you are reading this column, the annual Mission Creek Festival will be less than a month away, a sign that spring is beginning to rear its head and musicians are getting back on the road. This is a benefit to everyone and means that many artists with a wide variety of backgrounds and approaches to music will be making visits over the coming weeks.
