Tomorrow night the Mill will be hosting a benefit show for One Iowa, to raise money for the cause of defending marriage equality. The Trollies and the Mayflies will be performing! Silent auction of rad stuff.
The Mill Iowa City
Show Photos: Olivia Rose Muzzy, Stephanie Rearick, Alex Body @ the Mill – 11/13
I managed to pull a double show night, hurrying my tail through the cold of the Ped Mall between sets to shoot this lovely show at the Mill, while simultaneously shooting a show at Gabe’s (Featuring Coyote Grace and Sam Knutson — see those photos here). Not to toot my own horn, but I didn’t […]
Show Preview: S. Carey at The Mill, Dec. 10
From the beginning, S. Carey has been known for being ostentatious – this is most noted by his work with Bon Iver. Upon hearing that Justin Vernon was looking to expand his one-man project into a full band, S. Carey spent two weeks dissecting For Emma, Forever Ago in his bedroom. He learned the drum and vocal parts; then after approaching Vernon at a show and briefly jamming with him, he was hired on the spot.
Event Photos: Food in Harmony – 9/25

The Mill hosted a fundraiser benefiting the Local Foods Connection on Sept 25th. The evening was packed with music from a variety of local artists, art and handmade goods, raffles, a silent auction, dancing, Â food and booze….it was a great night and I was glad to be asked to capture some shots from the event.
The Thermals, Cymbals Eat Guitars live at The Mill
Here’s a little taste of what was going on in the background of all that homecoming madness. A great high energy set by Cymbals Eat Guitars, and a solid stand there and bash ’em out set by The Thermals.
Iowa City Weekender: August 26-29
Greetings Weekenders! In classic Iowa City style, this weekend the whole town is pulling out all the stops to welcome all you academics out there to a brand new school year, chock-full of nonstop, heady fun. Personally, I intend to be everywhere, all of the time. Here’s how: THURSDAY: Pure Party. Raise a glass to […]
Show Photos: Cheyenne Marie Mize, Archeology at the Mill, 7/29

I counted five instruments impressively played by Cheyenne on stage at the Mill this past Thursday – guitar, banjo, violin, drums and keyboard. She created a confectionery of soothing guitar and thoughtful lyrics that made me want to curl up in a booth and just listen instead of jumping around taking photos.
Show Review: Local Natives/Suckers – The Mill, 5/18/10
The Local Natives/Suckers tour is one of indie rock’s big draws right now, with sold out shows in cities from New York to Los Angeles. Both bands are riding a wave of accolades and glowing reviews. The Local Natives have been praised by scenesters and squares alike (Pitchfork loves the band; so do NPR and […]

Old Thrashers Reunion – The Mill 3/27/10
Long live the old thrashers. Liberty Leg, Acoustic Guillotine, HOTT, and Bad Accident demonstrated last night once again the how and the why, a night in the life, a little sliver of the all-Iowa City rock n roll royalty pie. A little taste is all you need really, but last night we bathed in it. […]
Knight Time
Features, March 2010 – Sure, an open mic is like a box of chocolates, but Monday night at the Mill is my favorite lime cream-centered, caramel pecan toffee of a weekly free music night in Iowa City. Since 1981, Open Mic with J. Knight has been an Iowa City institution, a place where up-and-coming talent […]
Blue Moose Rising: Iowa City Weekender, March 4-7
Welcome to a special ‘Blue Moose Rising’ edition of the Weekender. For the last couple of months the newest venue downtown has been making a pretty big splash booking acts like Saint Vincent, Hyper Crush, Motion City Soundtrack and of course Iowa City’s prodigal son William Elliott Whitmore (just to name a few). This weekend […]
