Did you brave the snowstorm to join us at Public Space One on February 2? Such hearty souls found a rich reward in this 43 minute set from Peter Wolf Crier. Download full, uninterrupted audio of the performance here.

Show Photos: Sam Locke Ward, Coolzey, The Whether Report, Liberty Leg – 2/17
Where do (did) you find 3 totally different musical experiences, a game show and a lot of moose drool? At the Blue Moose this past Thursday, of course! It was a nicely stacked bill: Sam Locke Ward, Coolzey, Jarret Mitchell’s Whether Report, Liberty Leg and a room full of all their closest friends, er fans. […]
Podcast: Douglas Kramer Nye 1/26/11
Douglas Kramer Nye joined us for Little Village Live at Public Space One on January 26, along with Liberty Leg and Koplant_No. If you couldn’t make it downtown for the show, we’ve got you covered with full audio from the performance.
Live Sets Pete Balestrieri, Tim Krein, Doug Nye 2-8-11 @ The Mill
Tuesday Night Social Club, Kids! Pete Balestrieri, him of the Ghostly Trio, Violent Femmes and Horns of the Dilemma, Iowa City’s favorite saxaphonist, plays a solo set of popular songs. Tim Krein, the 3 chord genius behind The Rusty Buckets, goes straight for the roots. Doug Nye, up and coming Iowa City songwriter has a […]
Show Photos: Wailers, Duane Stephenson, Dave Bess @ the Blue Moose – 2/5
It’s no shock that a Wailers show during Bob Marley’s birthday weekend is bound to be a party. When I arrived there were a few clusters of people hanging out throughout the bar, but the spaciousness was quickly eaten up by the massive crowd of people that came to hear the legendary band. In fact, I made the mistake of leaving my ‘front row’ spot, and was unable to claw and bite my way back up to the front.
Video: Peter Wolf Crier on Little Village Live
The Great Winter Storm of 2011 has begun to subside and you need a new conversation piece. Why not muse over all of the great music we’ll be bringing you this season on Little Village Live, broadcasting live from Public Space One via KRUI 89.7? Last week we hosted Twin Cities duo Peter Wolf Crier, who played a full set despite …
Art Show Photos: Pete Schulte | Oceans And Sky @ PS1 – 2/4
Last night, Public Space One hosted the opening reception for Pete Schulte‘s month-long gallery display, Oceans and Sky. I was there early and watched PS1 slowly fill up with folks standing around, admiring Schulte’s work and devouring absolutely delicious pastries courtesy of Iowa City’s Leaf Kitchen. As I wandered around the space, I was struck with […]
On the Beat: Great things, small packages
Architecture in Helsinki’s brilliant 2003 debut album, Fingers Crossed, kicks off with a short, Casio and drum machine instrumental called “One Heavy February.” Unlike so many ultimately forgettable album intros (noise pulses, voice mails, carnival barking, string quartets, what have you), the song is a deliciously melodic twee dance number, and at just under a […]
Photos: More Sensationalized Snow Photos
I know that the blizzard is old news now, seeing as everyone was out and about on this unusually sunny February day. We have all seen the copious amounts of snow dumped on our fair city, but I can’t resist showing you some more. I had some errands to run downtown and if I had to be out in this crap, I was sure going to distract myself…
Show Preview: Canasta Friday 2/4 at The Mill
Most of the press that surrounds the Chicago sextet Canasta is wrong.
Maybe I should be more clear. Upon my first listens of Canasta’s fantastic 2010 release The Fakeout, the Tease and the Breather I was immediately whisked back to my halcyon days of college in the early Nineties, when I had more hair on my head, less hair on my face and the dew of optimism had yet to be wiped from my eyes.
Show Photos: Tyvek, Solid Attitude, Non Prayer, Slut River @ the Wherehouse – 1/28
I never considered myself a punk fan until I started spending time at the Wherehouse. There has been one great punk show after another, and I’ve come to love the noises that blare from the massive speakers that usually accompany hardcore bands. Last Friday I reluctantly dragged myself out into the cold and down to the Wherehouse. I am always reluctant when it’s below 50 degrees, but I always manage to do it because these shows are always so damn good.
Liberty Leg / Douglas Kramer Nye / Koplant_No (trio) – Public Space One – 1/26/11
Thanks to all three bands for helping us kick off our series from PS1. Unforgettable sets from all three acts in the performance space combined with the PS1 silent auction–which turned out to be one of the coolest group shows to hit IC in recent memory–made this an event we were truly proud to be a part of.
