Last night, Public Space One hosted the opening reception for Pete Schulte‘s month-long gallery display, Oceans and Sky. I was there early and watched PS1 slowly fill up with folks standing around, admiring Schulte’s work and devouring absolutely delicious pastries courtesy of Iowa City’s Leaf Kitchen.

As I wandered around the space, I was struck with how delicate, yet bold Schulte’s work is, and how images that seem quite simple, like a canoe on the water, take on a very precise shading that I can’t imagine pulling off so meticulously. The gradation in his work looked much like mezzotint and i was impressed by how such small works (many were the size of a standard piece of paper or smaller) could be so engaging. The photos I took don’t do Schulte’s art justice, but don’t worry, you can go down and see it all with your own eyes. The exhibition will last til the 28th at the charming Public Space One.

But that’s not all….the crowd of folks who attended the opening were also lulled into pleasant submission by a brief, but entrancing, performance by The Gloaming Trio. Composed of Skye Carrasco, Jared Fowler and Chris Weirsema, the Gloaming Trio melts violin, vocals, guitar and ambient noise together into a rich sound had many listeners in a pleasant, trance-like state. If any of the members of TGT are reading, please perform again soon.
