There’s a touch of destiny, or perhaps buddy comedy, about Elizabeth Moen and Penny Peach Jr.’s artistic partnership. Originally from Norwalk, Iowa, Peach — her real name Elly Hofmaier, previously known by the stage name Elly h. — was about to start her freshman year at the University of Iowa when a friend played her some of Moen’s music.

Sister Species descends on Trumpet Blossom Cafe
Minneapolis-based band Sister Species features an eight piece lineup, including three trumpets, a double bass and, occasionally, an accordion. Touring shortly after the November release of their latest album, ‘Heavy Things Do More,’ and a new music video trilogy, Sister Species will be at the Trumpet Blossom Cafe in Iowa City at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2. Karen Meat’s musical circus
It’s a tale as old as time: Boy makes albums. Girl makes albums. Boy meets Girl. Boy and Girl make more albums. Boy and girl start touring together, performing in matching silver-lamé dresses. Or maybe that’s a new story, or at least news. In advance of their joint album release party May 12 at Gabe’s, I sat down to chat with Dana Telsrow (Dana T) and Arin Eaton (Karen Meat) at the Sanctuary. They’re now a couple, both personally and professionally, but met through music: Telsrow played a show at Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines, where Eaton was working the door. Later, Eaton asked Telsrow to play a show in Milwaukee when her full band wasn’t available, and they’ve been performing together ever since.

Album Review: Dana T’s ‘tiny mind MASSIVE soul’
Popular music is a tug of war between artistic and commercial concerns, and at the center of it all lays genre. For an artist, genres have stylistic signifiers and limits. A great musician can make punk rock that is satisfying and original within those limits, but if he or she adds a sitar or using diminished 13th chords, it usually stops being punk rock.
