Like most of the 13,000 or so people who requested a ticket to see Obama speak, I didn’t get in. So I chose to take some pictures outside.
The curious thing about Iowans — they’re polite! The Anti- and Pro-Healthcare Reform protesters were standing shoulder to shoulder. Not only that, unlike what we’ve seen nationally the anti-HCR protesters spelled their signs correctly.
There was even the chap who made a clever play on words with his sign that read “A Day That Will Live In Infirmary.” That sign bears close parsing:
- He’s quoting a Democratic President, Franklin Delano Roosevelt — the bête noire of those who revere Ronald Reagan above all other presidents.
- He’s comparing Health Care Reform to the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
- If you take it literally he’s saying that it’s a day that is somehow injured, and receiving medical care in an infirmary. Who is paying for this day’s health care, I wonder???
Well played, sir! Well Played!

I actually got video of Pro- and Anti-HRC Arguing, too!
