By Rev. Heecheon Jeon, Iowa City

I enthusiastically endorse Newman Abuissa for Iowa City Council.

As Senior Pastor of First United Methodist Church and Wesley Foundation of Iowa City, I have witnessed Newman’s unwavering commitment to our community’s most vulnerable residents. His lived experience as a Syrian immigrant gives him profound insight into the struggles many face, while his professional expertise as a transportation engineer at the Iowa DOT equips him with practical problem-solving skills our city needs.

Newman’s leadership as former board president of the Iowa City Human Rights Commission demonstrates his dedication to justice. He doesn’t just talk about protecting human rights — he has fought tirelessly for LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, tenants, the unhoused, and free speech advocates.

What sets Newman apart is his core conviction: people’s humanity must come before profit. In an age when economic interests often override human dignity, Newman promises to listen to and empower those whose voices are too often ignored. His progressive vision embraces environmental stewardship and celebrates Iowa City as both an educational hub and an intentional community where all belong.

Newman Abuissa will bring integrity, compassion, and expertise to the Iowa City Council. I urge you to vote for a leader who will truly serve all residents.
