Letter to the editor: Iowa City Council candidate Susan Mims has “demonstrated commitment to our community”

Susan Mims — Still by Jason Smith

By Brian R. Kirschling

Service. Dedication. Integrity. All of these words describe Susan Mims and her two decades of work on behalf of our community. As a past ICCSD school board member and twice elected Iowa City Council member, Susan has put our students, our residents and our neighborhoods first for many years and is far and away better prepared than her opponent to represent us on the Iowa City Council.

In her years of service, Susan has demonstrated her commitment to fiscal responsibility, which has led to six years of reduced tax levy while building reserves and maintaining a AAA bond rating. She continues to be committed to diversity in our community and among city staff so that all citizens feel welcome and safe. She has worked on improving pedestrian, bicycle and public transportation options so that all citizens have access to safe, affordable means of transportation that also decrease our community’s carbon footprint. She supports neighborhood stabilization as well as smart economic development and job growth in order to keep Iowa City as an attractive place to live.

Most importantly for me, Susan is a known entity. She works for us. She is committed to us. She understands Iowa City and its established neighborhoods. She is committed to the relationship between our schools and our community. She has the strength and fortitude to continue to serve us with honor.

I am proud to strongly support her and I hope you will too. Vote early or on Nov. 7.
