Susan Mims — Still by Jason Smith

By Carrie Norton

Sometimes a community gets lucky. A candidate for city council steps forward who is the right person, at the right time, for the right job. And for Iowa City, we are lucky again: Susan Mims is seeking re-election.

Susan’s comments and questions during city council meetings reflect she has studied the issue at hand and she knows the pertinent history as well as the current context. She has the reliably good judgement to vote in the community’s behalf. For example, she voted for the 15 point affordable housing plan, she is facilitating the development of an ACCESS Center for community members in crisis, she helped design a strategy for hiring a more diverse police force and she supported downtown development and the arts. As strong as she is on social justice issues, she also knows the substance and practical details of running a city: zoning, ordinances, fostering the right kind of development and bond ratings.

You can see it isn’t ideology that guides her; rather she moves issue by issue, pros and cons, with consideration for her entire community when deciding how to proceed in our behalf.

I think we are very lucky she wants to serve another term. Let’s make sure we voters get that done. As it is said: Luck favors the prepared. Our preparation now is to get out the vote. Let’s turn our good luck into votes so Susan Mims can continue serving our community for another term!
