Iowa City Pride is hosting the eighth annual Rainbow Run/Walk 5K in Iowa City’s Lower City Park on Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m.

As in previous years, proceeds from the event will support the Iowa City Pride Festival, which will be held in the Ped Mall on June 21. According to Rainbow Run organizer and Iowa City Pride Committee member Cindy Nagel, money raised at the event will cover everything from table rentals for Pride Festival vendors to community outreach and education efforts.

Local businesses like Her Soup Kitchen, Running Wild and Buzz Salon have donated prizes to be given out during the Rainbow Run. In addition to prizes for race winners in male, female and children’s divisions, prizes will be awarded for most festive individual and group costumes. Dogs are welcome to join in the fun too, and will have a chance to win prizes in a costume contest of their own.

“All are welcome,” Nagel said. “We’re trying to make this a bigger event every year, and trying to make it as large a community event as possible. We want everybody to come out and have fun.”

Registration for the Rainbow Run is $20 in advance or $25 on the day of the race, but teams of three or more can save $5 per person by signing up together. Participants are encouraged to get signed up by April 25 to be guaranteed a t-shirt. All registrations come with a free ticket for a raffle which is set to take place during the event. Pre-race check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. in Lower City Park Shelter #7.
