It seems like people have begun to find me at my Little Village A&E Editor e-mail address, which is, by the way kent.williams@littlevillagemag.com. So, I get press releases from artists and organizations outside my comfort zone. Which, if you didn’t know, is music that makes normal people plug their ears. But enough about me…
I’d have to confess I haven’t seen a Iowa City Community Theatre production since my brother was in a couple of shows in the 90s. But I have no doubt they’re a worthy organization, and since it’s Community Theater, it’s only going to be as good as we in the community make it.
And one great way you can make it better is to attend their benefit at the Piano Lounge. For those of you who aren’t down with musical theater, Steven Sondheim is the composer who is nearly alone in achieving high art within the form. Everyone else writes stuff that’s either horrible (I’m looking at you, Andrew Lloyd Weber), or completely forgettable.
So an evening of good vocalists singing Sondheim could be pretty great. And the open microphone part could be surprisingly magical, or Gong Show awful, but never boring. And it is in fact benefitting a very good cause, the continued existence of ICCT. And if you’re not quite sure about the whole thing, remember that liquor will be served.
