Wildfires rage in the hills surrounding a small Montana town in the 1960s. A father, humiliated by his boss while working at a golf course, joins a group of firefighters battling the blaze for weeks on end at $1 an hour. His wife resents her husband’s pride and temporary desertion of his family, and becomes […]

Letter to the editor: This holiday season, I’m giving back to the planet
To the future generation, I wish you peace and joy. Yes, it is that time of year to start preparing for the madness of the holidays. This year will be different. I am going to change, to help give you clean air and water.
Letter to the editor: The blame game continues after the death of GO Cedar Rapids
By Chad Cooper, Cedar Rapids If you’re sick and tired of reading about GO Cedar Rapids and newbo evolve, I’ll take no offense if you opt for a hard pass on this letter. This is now the fifth (!) piece I’ve written about this festival turned flatulent flagrancy, and these writings have been much more […]
Letter to the editor: I wanted to vote for Kim Reynolds. Then she misled Iowans.
When Kim Reynolds became the first woman governor of Iowa, I remembered that when I had run as a Republican candidate for state treasurer in 1998, some Republicans were admittedly unwilling to vote for a woman.
Letter to the editor: Halloween at NBC
“Megyn Kelly will not return to NBC’s ‘Today’ show following blackface controversy.” Let’s just hope she isn’t banished to a S__H__ country. I was not a fan, actually never saw her show, but carefully watched the offending segment just this minute, streaming from YouTube. I think the headline came out of a box, selected by a robot, or worse, by a PR hack.
Up 3,000 feet without a rope: The horror and beauty of ‘Free Solo’
Edge-of-your-seat suspense. Sky-high stakes. Psychological intrigue. Queasy cinematography. And enough unadulterated fear to make your heart pound and palms sweat. Perhaps FilmScene’s most viscerally frightening showing this month is ‘Free Solo,’ a documentary about the death-defying free solo rock climber Alex Honnold.
Letter to the editor: Cedar Rapids’ cult of banality
Insanity occurred in the council chambers of Cedar Rapids City Hall Tuesday night. Only a week removed from the dissolution of tourism organization GO Cedar Rapids after the newbo evolve debacle, city council members voted to let VenuWorks take over tourism duties for the city.
Letter to the editor: Help us fight for a carbon tax
Today, Canada announced that, starting in January 2019, they will adopt a national price on carbon, with revenue from the fee returned directly to Canadians. This is wonderful news. The fact that Citizens’ Climate Lobby Canada has been working with Parliament for the past eight years, urging them to implement such a policy, played no small part in making this happen.
Letter to the editor: For the sake of schools and civility, vote Jodi Clemens
This November, voters in eastern Johnson County and Cedar County who care about Iowa’s proud tradition of strong public education have a clear candidate to support by voting for Democrat Jodi Clemens for Iowa House District 73. The Republican legislature has boasted about increasing education funding without telling the whole truth that…
Letter to the editor: Iowa needs to stop incentivizing human trafficking
Human trafficking currently occurs in Iowa. Commercial exploitation is present in the incentivizing of the state removal of children from their biological parents, and in the manufacturing, agriculture and food service industries. Sex trafficking is going on right now in Iowa. I intend to focus on stopping the demand.
Letter to the editor: The Catholic Church must wrestle with the demon of pedophilia
Americans in the Trump age are accustomed to atrocities flashing across editorial space and vanishing into the next outrage, but there are exceptions in longevity. Critics and accusers of the Catholic Church, while it remains a viable institution, must wrestle with the demon of pedophilia. Cardinal Wuerl, archbishop of D.C., recently resigned from some of his exalted church offices, facing grand jury findings that he presided over cover-ups for pedophilic priests.
Letter to the editor: Protecting the environment and the economy is not a zero-sum game
Florida’s global warming climate-catastrophe hurricane dominates the news, momentarily eclipsing even the presumptive leader who calls this situation a hoax. Too many liars have access to public attention, voicing the dangerous and defeatist idea that there is a “cost” to defending the earth’s
