‘I think we need leadership that represents everyone’: Angela Winnike wants to bring a new voice to the Iowa City Council

Ask Angela Winnike, a candidate for one of the two at-large city council seats, why she is running for the Iowa City Council and she talks about making the council a better reflection of the city’s population. “I think we live a community that’s really inclusive and open-minded, but I think we need leadership that represents everyone in our community,” Winnike told Little Village. “And that means people of all gender identities, all ages, all ethnic and cultural backgrounds and different economic backgrounds.”

Sam Clovis: The Iowa connection to the arrests in the Trump/Russia investigation

Sam Clovis — the former rightwing radio host in Sioux City, who served a national co-chairman of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign — encouraged a Trump campaign foreign policy advisor to travel to Russia to get information from people connected to Russian government. According to his attorney, Clovis wasn’t encouraging collusion with the Russians, he was just being Iowa nice.

Iowa Supreme Court stays new anti-abortion rules, but access to services remains a problem

Iowa won’t be immediately joining the 27 states that impose a waiting period on women seeking an abortion. Last week, the Iowa Supreme Court issued an order temporarily staying the enforcement of a 72-hour waiting period that was among the new restrictions on abortion signed into law by Gov. Brandstad in May. But that decision doesn’t meant exercising the right to choose isn’t already a challenge in Iowa.

Comey tweets: Former FBI director James Comey makes news with a tweet from Iowa

Like the president who fired him, former FBI Director James Comey made news with a tweet this past weekend. Unlike Trump, Comey didn’t do it by attacking people or claiming credit for the work of others (the law declassifying the JFK assassination record was signed in 1992). Instead, Comey published a tweet on Sunday that finally confirmed his twitter handle is Reinhold Niebuhr (@FormerBu). It was a tweet from Iowa.

Obscure change in federal regulations may have big impact on local TV news in Iowa, and make the news more pro-Trump

On Tuesday, the Federal Communication Commission voted to eliminate a 77 year-old rule intended to ensure TV and radio stations serve the needs of their local communities. The vote on the so-called “Main Studio Rule” followed party lines, with all three Republican commissioners voting in favor of killing it, and both Democrats voting to preserve it.
