An update on the plans for the improvements to Iowa City’s Ped Mall will be presented at a meeting Thursday evening. The improvements are the next step in the Downtown and Pedestrian Mall Streetscape Plan that was approved by the city council in 2014.

“We’re at the stage where we’re developing the construction documents, and some of the designs of some of the elements have advanced since the last meeting in July,” Iowa City Senior Civil Engineer Scott Sovers said.

Those elements include the story walls and the shade structure for Black Hawk Mini Park, as well as the lighted gateways for the Clinton Street and Linn Street entrances to the Ped Mall that were described at the previous public meeting.

“With the constrained area we’re dealing with at those entry points, we’ve decided to scale back those gateways a little bit,” Sovers said. “It felt forced with the arches and the additional structures at those locations.”

The revised designs will be on display during the meeting at the Sheraton Hotel, which begins at 5:30 p.m.

Construction on the $6.5 million improvement project is slated to begin in April 2018 and finish in November 2019.
