Curbside recycling in Iowa City will get easier next month
Curbside recycling in Iowa City will become simpler next month. Starting Dec. 4, paper and non-paper items in recycling bins will no longer need to be separated. It’s an attempt to increase the number of household that recycle by making the process easier, according to the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center’s website.

Republicans in the Iowa State Senate have finished an internal investigation into whether their caucus created a hostile work environment, complete with sexual harassment and racist slurs, the Associated Press reported on Sunday. But the results of that investigation will not be made public.

Steve King and Chuck Grassley react to latest accusation of a Republican sexually abusing a woman
On Thursday, Rep. Steve King and Sen. Chuck Grassley both reacted to a story published earlier in the day by The Washington Post, which detailed allegations that Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore sexually molested a teenage girl. King tweeted something pro-Moore, while Grassley chuckled in response shouted questions from reporters.

Iowa City schools will get rid of controversial temporary seclusion rooms
The Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) plans to remove all the temporary seclusion rooms from its schools, according to an email sent to district parents by ICCSD Superintendent Stephen Murley. The temporary rooms are box-like 6-by-6-foot wooden structures with padded walls used to isolate students. Seclusion rooms are only supposed to be used as a last resort, when a student’s behavior is uncontrollable.

Pop-up shops planned for the Iowa City Ped Mall this holiday season
Pop-up shops are coming to the Ped Mall for the holidays. The Iowa City Downtown District (ICDD) is hosting its third annual Downtown Holiday Market, and this year it will feature a variety of shops in three temporary structures that will be built in Black Hawk Mini Park.

Internet trolls post pro-white signs in Iowa City
Signs reading “It’s okay to be white,” were found around Iowa City over the weekend, KCRG reported. Iowa City is just one of several cities in the United States and Canada where such signs have been found since the end of October. The signs were apparently inspired by a post on 4chan, an anonymous online message board.

‘This is about a movement’: District B candidate Ryan Hall wants to bridge the gap between students and others in Iowa City
University of Iowa undergraduate Ryan Hall said he believes his candidacy for the District B city council seat can help bridge what he sees as a gap between students and other residents of Iowa City. “A lot of the struggles that students are going through—the affordable housing crisis, paying way too much of the little money that they have trying to put a roof over their head—also effects our poor and working class in Iowa City,” Hall told Little Village. “So, if we bridge those gaps with the students and the residents of Iowa City to find solutions and build up the movement that is needed to build the voices, [and] the power of our local people really effect change.”

Seattle joins Iowa City as a UNESCO City of Literature
Iowa City is no longer the only UNESCO City of Literature in the United States. On Oct. 31, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designed Seattle as one of eight new cities of literature. Seattle was one of 64 cities added to UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which recognizes distinction in seven fields: crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts and music.
