By Mark Patton, Iowa City; retired executive director of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity
I have known Rod Sullivan as a member of the Johnson County Board of Supervisors for more than 25 years. In all of that time, he has never shied away from taking on the tough issues of the day: from more fair property taxes to the maintenance of rural roads and bridges, to supporting and uplifting those who can least afford to live in Johnson County. He has fought for higher wages, better housing and improved human relations the entire time.
Rod is running for re-election under a new set of rules put into place by the state Legislature (only in the three counties where state universities are located!?) which means he faces a primary.
As the Executive Director of Iowa Valley Habitat for Humanity for 13 years, I witnessed him fight for those who live on the margins of our society: the infirmed, the disabled, the poor, and the immigrants. His actions have been directed by the Golden Rule: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Please take the time to look at Rod’s track record and his stances for those who do not have power or prestige. If representing those who are less fortunate and powerless is important to you, please consider voting for Rod in the upcoming election.

Rod Sullivan is a fighter for Johnson County. While our state government has failed to increase the minimum wage, Rod fights for Johnson County workers. While our state ranks last for mental health beds, Rod has fought for mental health access in Johnson County. Donald Trump, Kim Reynolds, and Mariannette Miller-Meeks are failing our community. We need leaders like Rod to stand up and deliver for us. I’m proud to support Democrat Rod Sullivan.
