Dancer Camille A. Brown to hold lecture, debut her Hancher-commissioned performance ‘ink’

Dancer and choreographer Camille A. Brown, a 2016 Guggenheim fellow, has had work commissioned by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Urban Bush Women and more. This Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m., she presents ink, an original Hancher commission. The piece is the third in a trilogy about identity. The first two parts, Mr. TOL E. RAncE and BLACK GIRL: Linguistic Play, likewise explored black culture and identity.

The weight of skirts: Anna’s costumes in ‘The King and I’

On the day of the Women’s March, Jan. 21, 2017, King and I lead actress Heather Botts was onstage in L.A. playing Anna. When she said the line, “I believe women are just as good as men. just as intelligent, just as important,” Botts remembered, the show stopped. The audiences started cheering, roaring in her ears. She knew then she was apart of something, in a time in history that it was important to be telling the story of The King and I.

Review: Mission Creek opening day events at Hancher

At 6 p.m. on April 4, Joe Tiefenthaler opened Mission Creek 2017’s Hancher component with a short statement about the enduring importance of the arts in terms of building what is essential within human communities. In addition to thanking sponsors, it was a necessary statement (given the current political backdrop in which the arts risk no longer being funded by the government), and a welcome invocation of the need to remind ourselves of the essential ingredient that the arts play in our experience of being human.

Letter to the editor: Response to Hancher — ‘Cash is king’

I was picking up passengers at the Cedar Rapids airport. While I was waiting for their flight to land, I read a copy of your magazine, Little Village. On page six in Letters to the Editor, Steven Vosatka asked why Hancher Auditorium does not accept cash. [Aaron Hill, the Hancher food service supervisor,] offered this response: “Student employees did not have prior cash handling experience and some were struggling with the required training.”
