John’s Grocery is celebrating 70 years as a staple of Iowa City’s northside by focusing on what they do best: beer. John’s is hosting an anniversary party in their parking lot from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, offering beer and wine samples from visiting breweries and wineries, as well as chances to win prizes.

Going carless: Learn the basics of commuting by bike
If you are eager to learn more about bicycling but are not sure where to begin, ride (or walk) to World of Bikes next week for Bicycle Commuting 101. The two-hour event starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30. Part of the event will function as an organized workshop that details how to maintain and accessorize bikes, and part of it will be a discussion of safety and how cyclists can create routes that feel safe to them.

Botchway kicks off city council campaign focused on affordable housing, mental health and economic development
Kingsley Botchway kicked off his campaign for reelection to his at-large Iowa City Council seat with an event at Big Grove Brewery and Taproom last Friday. As people gathered in the game room to talk about issues, play ping-pong and share a meal, Botchway discussed three issues he plans to focus on if re-elected: affordable housing, mental health and economic development, including supporting small businesses.

Sarah Shook and the Disarmers at Big Grove
Since Big Grove Brewery opened its taproom in Iowa City, they have been booking music showcasing local and touring country, rock and roots music.
