School cancelled in West Branch because of threat (Updated)

Update: This story has been updated with information first reported by the West Branch Times.

Wednesday classes and activities in West Branch schools were cancelled by the West Branch Community School District on Tuesday night. A note at the top of the district’s website said the reason for the cancellation was “Safety and security precautions.”

The West Branch Times reported the district closed its three schools—West Branch High School, West Branch Middle School and Herbert Hoover Elementary—in response to “a threatening message” a student found in West Branch High near the end of school day on Tuesday.

West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan told the Times, “I don’t believe [the threat] is credible. But we are taking it seriously and handling the situation like it is.”

Horihan added, “I support the school’s decision to not have school [on Wednesday].”

Classes and other school activities are scheduled to resume on Thursday.
