Root, the Iowa-based organic beauty supply company, announced on Wednesday that it is closing its Iowa City store on the Ped Mall.

“We want to thank all of our Iowa City customers & also our hardworking staff for a fun year,” the company wrote on its Facebook page.

The Ped Mall store was the third brick-and-mortar location for Root, which was launched by Krista Dolash in 2013, as an online retail site for her own line of organic, gluten-free and vegan makeup. Speaking to The Gazette shortly before the Iowa City store opened in Feb. 2017, Dolash said she became interested in creating a more natural line of makeup while she was pregnant.

“I became one of those people who read every label. I thought the makeup that I was buying was natural, but little did I know that it was not,” Dolash said.

Dolash originally worked out of the kitchen of her Waverly, Iowa home. Root’s first store opened in Waverly in 2015. A second store opened in Cedar Falls in 2016.

In an email announcing the closure of the Ped Mall store, Dolash told Iowa City customers, “Don’t worry, you can still purchase all of your Root products on our website.”
