Roger Ebert documentary ‘Life Itself’ heads to FilmScene
Steve James’ documentary ‘Life Itself,’ opening at FilmScene on July 18, shares its title with the memoir of its subject, the late film critic Roger Ebert. Having only begun production in the final months of Ebert’s life, the documentary quotes Ebert’s memoir at length to supply narration and clarity, but one of the questions James is unable to get Ebert to answer before his death is “Why did you call your memoir Life Itself?” It’s a question the film itself leaves unanswered, at least explicitly, inviting us to ponder it of James’ documentary, just as he did of Ebert’s book.
Alt-country’s favorite son: Richard Buckner plays The Mill
Artful, inspired lyrics have set Richard Buckner apart as a singer-songwriter going as far back as his first self-produced collection in the mid-1990’s, Bloomed, an album which remains in release to this day. Buckner’s heartfelt lyrics lend his songs the emotional complexity of a well-made short story or lyric poem. Consider this 2008 solo electric performance of “Blue and Wonder” from Bloomed and how it’s able to convey the unflinching intimacy and heartbreak of love with the simple but raw lines like “What’s that word I forget sometimes?” and “There’s things even drunks like us will never forget.”
Going away party: Nine acts to play PS1 this Saturday
We’re approaching the end of July, so, of course, Iowa City is gearing up to bid farewell to some of it’s most beloved residents. One such Iowa Citian, Jason Salek, will be leaving for Omaha this August. Before his departure, however, there is going to be one hell of a show at Public Space One on Saturday, July 19 to celebrate his contributions to the city’s music…
Sandbox: Meet Erika and Christopher
Hi Sandbox readers! Erika and Chris here, PS1’s newest artist residents. We will be here for the remainder of the summer. Our goal is to collaborate and push ourselves into artistic directions we have not ventured into before. So far Erika has worked primarily in ink drawings that serve as a social critique of American culture. Chris works primarily through video and performance that uses violence and eroticism to explore the inner workings of ourselves. Together we look forward to becoming an active part of the community and sharing our work with the public.
Sandbox: Part one – Finding Objects
As I begin a free artist residency at Public Space One, I’ve been given this opportunity to blog about the experience. By putting my thoughts (and my questions) out there in an open-ended forum, I hope to get comments and conversation back. The blog series will be a continuing thread, with Part Two elaborating and reflecting on Part One, and so on.
Folk-pop powerhouse: Wild Child to play Sunday at Gabe’s
Austin, Texas’s Wild Child are playing an all ages show at Gabe’s this Sunday at 7 p.m. They’ll be joined by Walker Lukens and The Side Arms, also from Austin, and Iowa City’s Teen Daad. Wild Child was formed during a tour with the Danish band The Migrant, when two members of the touring band, Kelsey Wilson and Alex Beggins, began writing songs in the van while driving from show to show. Their songwriting chemistry was palpable, and almost exactly a year later, the group finished their first record, Pillow Talk.
