Golden Donna w/ Reaches, Dad HD, Cuticle
Gabe’s (downstairs) — Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 9 p.m.
Tonight at Gabe’s, expect some serious hipster-house greatness, as Golden Donna, Reaches, Dad HD and Cuticle play a free show together. Each artist has staked out their particular style of strange, heady dance music and should make for an intriguing evening, to say the least.
Golden Donna, the project of Milwaukee’s Joel Shanahan, has received the support and distribution of taste-making labels like Not Not Fun and 100% Silk for good reason. His tracks are ’80s-indebted voyages through ambient, industrial and R&B signifiers. Having toured as the guitarist for Julian Lynch’s backing band a few years back, Shanahan is of a decidedly art-damaged music lineage, and as such, the places he takes his music are both surprising and compelling.
On tour with Golden Donna is Chicago’s Reaches, the new project of Justin Randel. Formerly playing under the moniker I Love You, Randel’s approach to electronic music finds a saccharine sweetness in the avant-garde, making feel-good party music out of free-form noise. His latest album, Psuedodoxia, was released late last year under the I Love You moniker. The record’s stand-out track “We Will Bury Your Student Debt Beneath the Sands of an Australian Beach” sounds like an alternate-universe Top 40 hit — dancey but unafraid of exploring unfamiliar sounds.
Locals on the bill include Dad HD, a new moniker for local MIDI-wizard Ryan Beck (of Sky Fauna, MIDI SICK, and others), as well as a DJ set from Cuticle’s Brendan O’Keefe. The show begins and 9 p.m. and it’s free, but bring some cash for the touring acts, y’hear?
