Jes Raymond & the Blackberry Bushes

The Mill — Friday, Oct. 14 at 9 p.m.

When it comes to Americana, Jes Raymond and the Blackberry Bushes, hailing from the wilds of Seattle, WA, run the gamut of influences, with hints of everything from gospel and bluegrass to jazz and psychedelia. They will be hosted by The Mill Friday night at 9 p.m., and tickets are $10-12.

Raymond’s picking style dances delightfully around collaborator Jakob Breitbach’s entrancing fiddling, resulting in a combo that is bound to get your foot tapping. Her voice balances somewhere between a country warble and the laser-sharp clarity of folk music’s best. Raymond and Breitbach are surrounded by what they call “a rotating cast of believers”, which often results in an exciting five-piece of new talents and ideas.

Jes Raymond & the Blackberry Bushes will be joined by The Feralings, a four-piece string band with ties to Iowa favorites The Mayflies and The Letterpress Opry. The group states that they “travel a vast musical landscape, combining bully musicianship, sparkling harmonies, and evocative songwriting. And hey, they don’t bite.”

Genevieve Trainor lives in Iowa City, Iowa. Passions include heavy music, hoppy beer, and hidden rooms.
